Book Clubs in Reading Workshop

What’s happening

Students are engaged their first unit of study, Interpreting Book Clubs. Students are placed in book clubs and are reading the same book within their group. Student discussions will be based on analyzing theme.

“What can I do at home?”

At home, ask your child questions about their independent reading book. Children should be reading for at least 30 mins a night. Ask them questions about how parts of the story relate to the whole story, ask them to determine theme, ask them questions where they have to compare and contrast story elements and theme. Most importantly ask them about the books they are reading.

What it looks like

Below you will see kids from class 318 engaged in Book Clubs. Small groups of students are having discussions on the rug or at their tables. Some students are doing “Stop and Jots”, posting sticky notes in their books to mark parts of the text, highlighting key information to be discussed in their book club. You will also find charts featured in the classroom for students to refer to and learn from.
