Addition Strategies in First Grade

What’s Happening?

First grade has started a new chapter in math which focuses on using Addition Strategies. As addition problems start having bigger numbers, students are learning new ways to find their answers.

“What Can I Do At Home?”

At home, encourage students to use strategies like use a number line or to use the strategy Count On- where students put the bigger number in their head and then count on to find their answer. Also, ask students to think of their doubles facts to help them solve addition problems with big numbers.

What It Looks Like…

Below you will see students in class M5 as they practice adding bigger numbers with tools like a number line. You will also find a Strategies Chart featured in the classroom which students refer to when picking a strategy to help them solve addition problems with number greater than 10.
