Kindergarten

Hands on Subtraction

What is Happening

In Kindergarten, students are learning about subtraction! Students are solving a variety of subtraction situations. Students are acting out subtraction problems and using manipulatives, drawings, ten frames, and number sentences to develop an understanding of subtraction.

What Can I do at Home

At home, have your child listen to and act out a subtraction problem. Encourage them to describe what they see. For example, there are four balls. One rolls away from the set. Now there are three left (4-1=3). Students use counters to represent everyday uses for subtraction. Students might use seven counters as a model for seven cars, then take away two to model two cars driving away.

What it Looks Like

Students solve subtraction problems with objects, drawings, and ten frames. Students are working on explaining how they solve problems.
